Chocolate – Magic Beans?

Chocolate, a girl’s best friend! But what do we know about the food that plays such a big role in our lives? The content, reviews and controversy surrounding chocolate are vast. The question is, why?

Why do we love it?

How come these bitter brown pods create such luxurious pleasure that an average of 8.4 kg per person is consumed each year? Chocolate affects the lives of most people in the UK in a major way, but why is the world going so crazy over this unique sweet taste?

Live in the UK; the 7th largest consumer of chocolate, even with summer fast approaching, chocolate isn’t exactly hard to find. The chocolate market has never been so popular; and although women around the world promise to ditch comforting addiction for the sake of their bikini bodies, how long will that last? One day? Maybe two? But you’ll be glad to know that cold turkey might not be the solution after all!

So where is the science behind all of this?

Tests have proven that chocolate in moderation can actually be good for you. It contains over 300 distinct chemicals, including flavonoids; these have powerful antioxidant effects that thin the blood to help prevent clotting and heart disease, and adding to the good news red wine has a similar effect. Dark chocolate in particular is a powerful antioxidant (which can prevent illnesses such as cancer or coronary heart disease), so for dark chocolate lovers, the news just keeps getting better, but for those with a sweet tooth, eating too much chocolate can have the opposite effect. Due to the huge amount of fat and sugar present in chocolate, heart disease is once again on the table. The main thing to remember is this: a small amount of chocolate, especially dark, is the way to go. Not only does this reduce the risk of obesity, but it actually benefits your body in so many ways.

It’s the fault of the brain

While many of the facts above are extremely welcome for chocolate lovers nationwide, that’s not why we all love this product, so is the brain at fault? The chocolate “feel good factor” is actually very scientific; “Chocolate contains cannabinoids – the same compound responsible for the marijuana high. It stimulates the brain’s pleasure receptors.” And while you’d need 25 pounds of the stuff to supposedly get really high, the cannabinoids certainly add to the kick. This, combined with increased serotonin and endorphin levels (these hormones produce a sense of well-being and drives the addictive ‘feel-good factor’) and an extra caffeine buzz sums up how the brain is chemically affected.

The obvious question now is how addictive is this chocolate drug. Cases of chocolate addiction are rare, but the desire to give up caffeine is becoming increasingly popular. But there are many claims that despite all this science, the reason people opt for chocolate is only psychological, even opening the package and looking at the contents will trigger your serotonin fibers!

A very long time ago…

So where did the magic begin? What actually goes into chocolate to give it the nation’s favorite flavor? In its rawest form, chocolate starts with a simple cocoa bean. It was not until the discovery of America around 1492 that the ancient world discovered chocolate. The origins date back to the ancient Mayan and Aztec civilizations of Central America, who first enjoyed “chocollatl”; a popular spicy drink made from roasted cocoa beans, the only way to enjoy chocolate at the time. It was not until the Victorians arrived that ‘solid’ chocolate was devised. It was in 1765 that the first chocolate factory was established in the world and the number of factories is still increasing today. Then, of course, came Cadburys. Starting with the drink mentioned above, through chocolate covered assortments and up to the famous Dairy Milk Cadburys which have dominated the market since the beginning, and to this day it is one of the best companies in the world .

Is it all so sweet?

But chocolate isn’t just snacking in front of the TV and the perfect Valentine’s Day gift. Have you ever wondered who and where he comes from these days? The answer is not pleasant. Do you have children under 14? Younger brothers or sisters? Now imagine carrying deadly machetes all day through the dangerous plantations of West Africa. Multiply that by 284,000 just in West Africa. This is your answer. Some 2,500 people are said to be victims of trafficking to work in Côte d’Ivoire and Nigeria and do not have access to education or even decent housing; they walk around with untreated wounds on their legs and nothing to work on. “I was going to school,” says Marc Yao Kwame, who works with his brother on an isolated farm. “But my dad doesn’t have anyone to work on the farm, so he took me out of school. My mum is away from home. I haven’t seen her in 10 years – since I was 2.

But we can help you. The ‘Divine’ company created an all-fair trade chocolate business, soon followed by ‘Dubble’; a version for the younger generation. Farmers own a third of the company’s shares, meaning they not only make a profit from their business, but have a say in how the chocolate is made and sold. Divine Chocolate can be found in many supermarkets and has just under 30 different types, ranging from mini eggs to after-dinner mints. At Tesco, the 100g milk and black bars cost just 99p and the mint bar £1.09 – a small price to pay to help those who suffer live fairer lives.

To summarize…

Hopefully the world of chocolate has become clearer now and despite the obvious downsides, maybe there were some welcome facts? I think the general message here is that people LOVE chocolate. Despite the many theories, no one really knows why, so I’ll let you continue to meditate on the magic of chocolate.
