Nursing Pads – Pros, Cons, Rights and Wrongs

I had seen and heard of nursing pads before I had my first baby, but it never occurred to me that I would be in a hurry to buy them. I had nothing against them outwardly, but until you actually start breastfeeding, it’s hard to imagine fluids gushing out of your nipples.

That’s why I was surprised when, around the third day after giving birth (I was still in the hospital with baby), I woke up with pebbles (they turned out to be my breasts) attached to my my chest and the strange smell of rotten milk…which turned out to be breast milk painting rivers down the front of my shirt.

So the number one reason for breast pads – SMELL. At least in the first weeks when the milk is most concentrated. If you are wearing nursing pads and they start to smell bad, you can always replace them with new ones. In my case, I didn’t have any with me and I don’t think I had any spare clothes left. I had never thought of buying pads before going to the hospital, so I contacted a friend of mine who had just finished nursing and asked her if she could send in a few days’ supply, which what she did.

And so began my nursing pad training. First of all, these things can be found under almost as many names as there are brands, fabrics, shapes and sizes. Breast pads, breast pads, bra liners – they’re all basically the same thing. What ultimately sets them apart from each other is how well they work.

I started with disposables because I wasn’t sure I’d need them long enough to justify the cost of washables. I found the price difference between expensive brand name products and cheap generic products to be huge. I couldn’t imagine why I would opt for the more expensive ones – at first. And then one day I looked down to see my dear son sucking with what looked like a mouthful of foam. Turns out the towel I slept with had disintegrated and pieces were clinging to my nipple. As you can imagine, it was very painful for me to see pieces of bleached paper fiber in my newborn baby’s mouth. I vowed to stop using this brand and instead switched to another inexpensive brand – with the same results. Once I figured out these things had a tendency to fall apart, I was a little wiser to let my son hang on before checking the area for debris. However, it was time to move on. There are some things in life that just aren’t worth dealing with, and breast pad disintegration is one of them.

At this point, I realized that I was a big leaker. Between that fact and the unfortunate incidents of disintegration, it seemed safe to me to upgrade to the more expensive pads. In the brand price category, there are wicking pads, breathable pads, pads made of all kinds of materials and combinations of materials. There are pads that boast of being quiet – no wrinkle crease. Some pads have indentations for your nipples, some advertise super absorbency. Personally, I found one of these things worked for me. I just had to remember to keep enough on hand so I could change them as often as I needed.

What’s important to note is that yeast, aka thrush when it grows on your nipple and your baby’s mouth, will thrive in a warm, moist environment. So either you have to be diligent about changing tampons when needed, or you have to buy one that wicks moisture away from your skin.

Buying reusable tampons was another step up. Obviously, there are environmental benefits to this, and there’s the added bonus of not having to worry about transferring all the chemicals from the manufacturing process to the baby since you’ll probably be washing them quite often.

Things to consider when choosing nursing pads:

– Shape and size: these two characteristics will determine the visibility of the cushion under your shirt. So I guess it depends on the types of clothes you like to wear and also the season. Larger pads aren’t necessarily more absorbent, but you may find them more comfortable and the seams less protruding when they’re not pushed against the front of your bra cup. With a larger pad, you also have less to worry about it moving around inside your bra and getting out of reach of the leaky nipple. The thickness of the stamp can also make a difference in its visibility. There is a thin but absorbent towel.

– Fabric: The absorbency of the pads depends largely on the composition of the pad. The fabric or material will also contribute to how warm the pad feels, whether it keeps moisture close to your skin or wicked away, and it can also contribute to odor or lack thereof. When it comes to disposables, you’re mostly looking for papers, plastics, and cotton, although some contain absorbent gels such as those found in baby diapers. Washables range from plain cottons to flannels, hemps, and even wool pads. There are even adhesive silicone pads that somehow prevent leaks and can be worn in the water with bathing suits or without a bra – now that’s a novelty when breastfeeding.

Nursing pad reviews are available online, and some sites that sell pads will also have reader reviews below. If you’re looking for the economy and durability of reusable sanitary napkins but haven’t decided which ones to invest in, you can always invest in a box of disposables until you’re ready to take the plunge. Disposables are also good to keep on hand in baby’s bag for travel and for unexpected events.
