Feeding Baby: How Much Is Enough?

Feeding a baby can seem like a daunting task, especially if you’re a first-time parent, but there really is no mystery there. In fact, it can be a wonderful and fulfilling experience for both parent and baby when approached in the right way.

Recent research shows that infants are born with an instinct, called appestat, which sends a signal to “stop eating” to the part of the brain that controls appetite. Trusting that innate sense of how much food will satisfy baby’s appetite lays the foundation for good eating habits for the rest of his life.

To account for your baby’s appetite, pay special attention to when he signals that he is full. Here are some clues to look for:

1. A newborn coughs up the nipple or falls asleep

2. At six to twelve months, look for these signs:

Your baby turns his head to regulate the rhythm or end the feeding

Your baby refuses to open his mouth

Your baby spits out his food or stores it in his mouth

3. At one or two years:

Your baby is shaking her head no

Your baby puts his hand in front of his mouth and pushes away the hand that offers him food

Your baby uses simple words like “No”, “Don’t” or “Away”

Finally, your baby pushes or throws away a plate, cup or spoon

4. At two or three years:

Your baby is combining words, “It’s all done” or “Come down”

Your baby pushes the plate away

Your baby tries to take off his bib

Infants and toddlers who are allowed to follow their hunger and fullness cues, eating only what their body needs to be healthy, will develop habits of moderation that should last a lifetime; however, as important as it is to let the child judge how much food they want, it can be one of the hardest things for a parent to do.

If a child’s natural appetite breaks down because they are often encouraged to eat when they are full, eating problems can develop and determining when and how much to eat can become a battle between parent and child. Remember that many parents tend to give infants and toddlers larger portions than necessary and then expect them to finish all the food on their plates. Always start small, then let your little one show you – in their own way – if they want more.

How to make a delicious apple-pear puree for baby at six months:

Seckel pears are delicious miniature pears that are in season between August and January. Because of their size, they are ideal for making porridge purées and because they are naturally sweet, babies love them! Pears are also a rich source of nutrients.

Ingredients needed for the apple pear puree:

1. 1 ripe Seckel pear or 1⁄2 pear of another variety

2. 1⁄4 cup (60 g) unsweetened applesauce

3. 1⁄4 cup (60 ml) unsweetened apple juice

Stove Top method for apple pear puree:

First, peel, core and chop the pear. Place the pear in a small saucepan with the applesauce and cook, covered, over medium heat for 5 to 7 minutes, until the mixture is tender. Allow the mixture to cool slightly, then add to the blender with the juices and whip into a smooth puree.

This recipe, well covered, will keep for 2 days in the refrigerator.

Each serving of apple pear puree contains: 28.4 calories; 0.0 g total fat; 0.0 grams of saturated fat; 0.0 mg of cholesterol; 1.0mg sodium; 7.4g carbohydrates; 0.9g dietary fibre; 0.1g protein; 6.1mg Calcium; 0.1mg iron; 9.5 IU of vitamin A; and 3.7 mg of vitamin C.
