Pampukavu Or Snake Temple
In Malayalam, pampu means snake and kavu means temple. Snake worship is perhaps as old as the earth itself. The reason is obvious. When forests were cleared for human habitation, snakes were disturbed and snakebites are very common even in modern times. So we try to appease the serpent god.
All the old houses had pampukavu. A small piece of land is marked off and the cobra idol, made of granite, is installed on a small mound. This piece of land remains undisturbed throughout the year, except on the star day Ayilliam in the month of Kanni (roughly September 16 to October 15), when just enough space is cleared of grass to allow to the poojari to sit and do the rites. Punnyaham (purification), Abhishekam (bath) with milk, coconut water and turmeric, and offering naivedyam (things to eat) are the main functions. Now there are few houses with pampukavu. The Pichakassery mana near the temple reservoir in Peruvanam is where the virgin pampukavu forest is still preserved, although too small to qualify as a forest! All Madangarli mana is practically a forest now with two pampukavu!
When I was little, my uncle in Pazhai used to do pooja in several houses. Being old, he wanted to avoid it and told me to do so. I protested, saying that I didn’t know how to do it, because I didn’t know the mantras.
He persuaded me, because I could earn money as a dakshina. Water for purification was made by him with appropriate mantras and I carried it in a kindi (a kind of pitcher). In one place, while I was pooping, a real snake appeared. I kept my punnyaham water fresh and sprinkled on his head with all devotion! I was very relieved when he retreated into his hole!
