The Dish: Former Dallas Cowboys Fan Tells All
I was a Dallas Cowboys fan.
I really did: I was born in New England and became aware of the NFL in the mid-1970s. My six-year-old version clung to America’s Team. Maybe it was the shining star. Maybe it was the pretty cheerleaders. I was a Roger Staubach fanatic. I freaked out when Jackie Smith dropped the TD Super Bowl pass. I cried over the futility of Danny White. I hate The Catch. I reveled in the resurgence of Jimmy Johnson and lived in Texas for three Super-Bowls in four years. I suffered in the late 90s.
But I can’t stand Dallas much anymore. Part of that is being a columnist; it becomes more and more difficult to choose sides. But part of that is the 2006 team. It’s officially unbearable.
I like Bill Parcells. Obviously, I didn’t like him very much when he was the Giants coach, but I respected him. When he was coaching the Patriots, my favorite AFC team, I loved this guy. And when Dallas announced that they had hired him, I thought: finally. But Parcells falters. At each press conference, and on the sidelines at each match, we see his career pass before his eyes. He’s had enough of this batch of misfits, and who can blame him?
I’ve devoted enough pixel dust in this space to Terrell Owens. He’s the poster child for what’s wrong with American professional sports. But there’s also the silly kicker, Mike “Earring” Vanderjagt. There’s Drew Bledsoe, who seems like a classy guy, but is horribly painful watching the quarterback play. There’s an owner whose liposuctioned face resembles the guardian of the crypt, and who insists on playing general manager, despite an undisputed record of absolute failure in the role. Heck, on this team, terminal grouse Terry Glenn looks like a good guy. They strut around in defense like they’re good (they’re not), and they argue on the sidelines like a COPS takeover.
It’s an insufferable group of people to support. They dominate the headlines with stupid non-issues (most of which, I agree, revolve around Owens, aka, the world’s worst guy). They act like idiots when they win, and they act like idiots when they lose. The milk curdled. The pudding is spoiled.
And here’s something I never thought I’d say: I don’t like the Cowboys much anymore.
How has World Series betting been? Was it mostly pro-Tigers before the show started? Did that change as we progressed, and the Cardinals made it clear that they weren’t to be taken lightly?
BoDog Bookmakers, BoDog.ws: The Tigers haven’t been favored as heavily as people think so far in the playoffs. With a first-round game against the Yankees, Detroit didn’t get much respect, and the more they won, the more the public thought the Yankees were a safe bet. Then they faced a very solid Oakland team, where the action mixed on both sides, depending on who took the mound. After a sweep there, bettors began noticing Detroit’s talented roster. In Game 1 of the World Series, we saw the majority of the money go to Detroit, which by then had recorded seven straight playoff wins. But the Cardinals made a statement with a 7-2 win. The last two matchups have seen two aces heading for the mound: Rogers in Game 2 and Carpenter in Game 3. The action in those instances has been slightly heavier depending on the star pitchers. The Cards seem very comfortable in the playoffs and they have practiced a lot over the past few years. It’s pretty clear that with a 2-1 lead, they’re racing to finish this thing on their own turf.
What a crazy, underdog-laden Week 7 in the NFL: By my count, eight “dogs” had outright wins. Obviously, it’s not unprecedented, but I guess it was a pretty good week for the books? Would you tell us which games have been the worst beats for the betting public?
BDB, BoDog.ws: It’s been a good week for books with a handful of big upheavals. Tampa Bay’s miracle win over Philadelphia, Oakland beating an Arizona team that challenged the Bears, and Kansas City not folding at home to San Diego were three of the biggest beatings for the public. bettors.
The NBA opens on October 31 (how macabre!). Right here: Give us your NBA finalists and tell us why.
BDB, BoDog.ws: Cleveland and Phoenix. Cleveland because the NBA needs it; LeBron showed last year that the team had playoff potential. If he can now take the team to the Finals, the NBA can use history to try to return the league to Jordan’s glory days. Phoenix because San Antonio is too boring, and if Detroit is successful in the East, at least we won’t have to nap in the NBA Finals anymore.
What do you think of the NFL’s decision to hold two regular season games a year on international soil? Do you think this will negatively affect the participating teams? Do you think it will do anything special for betting?
BDB, BoDog.ws: It seems odd that the NFL is going international for two regular season games. The pre-season is understandable, but it could definitely put a little more strain on the participating teams. Flying to, say, Japan mid-week and returning Monday morning to the United States to prepare for the following week will certainly not be as easy as a two- to three-hour flight between states. This shouldn’t have too much of an impact on betting, provided the games have the same TV coverage. Hey, who are we to interview one of the most successful leagues in the world?
