Baby Got Gas? A Guide to Baby Indigestion

Have you ever heard of baby indigestion? Do you even know what it is? Well, think about heartburn and indigestion and how it can make you feel. The pressure deep in your chest and abdomen is enough to make you feel like you’re having a heart attack. Now imagine that feeling on a 2 week old baby. YIKES!!! I can tell you that everything you feel is amplified 100% in your child. Added to the intense pain the child is feeling is the fact that he has no way of telling you what he is feeling. They can’t say “mom, my stomach hurts”.

What causes indigestion in babies?

Well, in adults, there are several causes, but, for babies, I think we can safely rule out drinking alcohol, smoking, and eating spicy foods! It is also quite rare for babies to have stomach ulcers or gallstones. This means we can focus on food allergies and sensitivities as the 2 main causes of indigestion in babies. So now that we have a general idea of the potential causes of baby indigestion; how do we know if our baby has indigestion?

Symptoms of baby indigestion can include:

• Fits of restlessness and/or crying that may end after gas relief

• Irritability

• Constipation

• Insomnia

• Curd of undigested food in the stool (okay, let’s call it poo, that’s it!)

• Very foul smelling poop and even diarrhea in extreme cases

Now, it is very important that we understand one thing; and that indigestion is not a cause or disease in itself. It’s just a symptom. So, what we need to do is find the real cause of the baby’s indigestion. So know that the real causes of baby indigestion are:

• Wasted food

• Food allergy

• Food sensitivities

Spoiled food and baby indigestion

Spoiled food is not good for adults as it can lead to all sorts of stomach issues and it is no different for our children. Therefore, if you are feeding your baby formula, make sure that the expiry date has not expired. Also, you should be extra careful when sterilizing all bottles and equipment that comes in contact with formula. Make sure the water you give your baby or use to mix powdered formula is safe and has been boiled.

Another thing that should be avoided at all costs is reheating baby bottles. Mothers, if you are guilty of this practice, please STOP IMMEDIATELY. If baby hasn’t eaten it all, throw it away. Also, if you are expressing breast milk, be sure to ONLY use sterilized containers to store it. Refrigerate and use the milk within days or store in the freezer to make it last longer. Just following these simple tips could dramatically reduce baby’s indigestion.

Phew!!! Now that took care of the spoiled food. Ok, what about food allergies and how do babies get allergies when they only get one thing? ? ï Š I mean, does that even make sense? Continue reading.

First, it can be confusing trying to tell the difference between an allergy and a food sensitivity. So how can you tell the difference and how does this relate to baby indigestion?

Baby Food Allergies & Sensitivities & Indigestion – Formula

First of all, we need to understand that allergies can cause strong reactions like severe hives and rashes, vomiting, swelling of soft tissues like ears and lips, or life threatening with anaphylactic shock reactions. sensitivities; however, they are milder and cause less severe indigestion, discomfort, constipation, and rashes. You know those foods that just aren’t right for you.

It is very common for babies to be allergic or sensitive to cow protein. Rest assured that most will emerge before the age of one, but that first year can be tricky. For formula-feeding moms, you’ll need to switch to a soy-based formula or a formula specially formulated for babies who are sensitive to cow’s protein.

Oh, there’s a word of caution; and that is to say, it is common for babies who are sensitive to cow protein to also have sensitivity to soy protein. However, rest assured that there are formulas that do not contain soy or cow’s milk.

Baby Food Allergies, Sensitivities, and Indigestion – Breastfeeding

If you are breastfeeding, remove all dairy products from your diet. This is because the foods you eat are passed on to your child through your milk. Therefore, your breast milk may contain traces of cow’s milk protein from the dairy products you eat. So I mean cut out ALL dairy if you want to reduce baby indigestion. Start reading food labels!!

Believe me, I know it sucks, I’ve done it myself in the past. You’ll have headaches and feel like crap for a few days as your body detoxifies and pushes dairy through your system. Basically, you will go through a bit of a withdrawal. Cheese as a drug… who knew?

The Fix – replacing cow’s milk with goat’s milk as this can usually be tolerated quite well. After breastfeeding my kids for 6 months I put them both on goats milk and guess what?? They still love him. It’s available at most major grocery stores and can be frozen if you need to stock up!

So how can you relieve your baby of baby indigestion?

You can use gripe water for more “instant” relief from baby’s indigestion. You can get it at any drugstore, and many health food stores have an alternative with all natural ingredients. I have also tried some of the tablets that are on the market – most manufacturers call Colic indigestion so look for products that say Colic Relief or something like that. The label “colic” is a bit of a misnomer because colic in infants may have nothing to do with indigestion, but that debate is for another newsletter!

Additionally, you can give your baby tummy massages and baby enemas to relieve indigestion. Remember though that none of these “instant relief” techniques are aimed at the cause of the indigestion; they just treat the symptoms.

A longer-term solution to the problem is to check for food sensitivities and allergies that may be causing indigestion.

How can this be done?

By analyzing a stool sample from your baby, your doctor can determine if there is any undigested cow protein and if your baby is sensitive to dairy products.

As always, I recommend talking to a doctor or naturopath about your baby’s symptoms if you are concerned.
