A Universally-Recommended Vaccine for Sheep and Lambs
Flock vaccination is an essential part of raising healthy sheep and lambs. CD-T toxoid is one of the most recommended and widely used herd inoculations. CD-T toxide provides multi-faceted protection in three ways: protect against enterotoxemia caused by Clostridium perfringens types C and D, as well as tetanus (also called trismus) caused by Clostridium tetani. Keep reading to learn more about this lifesaving vaccine and the common lamb and sheep diseases it protects against.
3-, 7- and 8-way clostridal vaccines for sheep
Although the typical 3-way Clostridial vaccine is sufficient in most cases, there are also 7- and 8-way Clostridial vaccines available, which provide additional coverage against Clostridial diseases such as malignant edema and blackleg. Vaccination against tetanus and enterotoxemia types C and D are the most common and effective options for sheep and lamb flocks.
Vaccines against enterotoxemia types C and D
Also called “hemorrhagic enteritis” or “bloody diarrhea”, type C enterotoxemia is most common in young lambs, often born within a few weeks. The main implication of this disease is that it causes a bloody infection in the lamb’s small intestinal system. The actual cause of this condition is sometimes difficult to assess as it is also related to several conditions including a sudden increase in milk production (perhaps when a litter mate is removed), a change in diet (c i.e. bacterial growth, creeping feeding, etc.), chronic indigestion and even genetic predispositions. Inoculation of dams early in gestation is a common method of preventing enterotoxemia type C, followed by vaccination of lambs at 7 or 8 weeks of age.
Enterotoxemia type D is very similar to type C in that it can be caused by many of the same underlying genetic conditions and predispositions. However, it is mainly due to overeating, giving it its colloquial nickname “kidney pulpy disease”. Lambs over a month old are frequent targets of this disease. In most cases, the fast-growing lambs in the flock are affected because they already have a bacteria in their gut that is proliferating following a sudden change in feed. This excessive bacterial growth causes an often fatal toxic reaction. The enterotoxemia type D vaccine is effective in preventing this disease when given to mothers during pregnancy.
Tetanus
It is important to administer anti-tetanus at the time of lashing and castration of lambs. This is especially important if elastic bands are used. Although temporary, this vaccine provides immediate protection against Clostridium tetani. In contrast, tetanus vaccines provide more adequate protection, but take at least 10 days or more to become effective in the bloodstream. They also require periodic booster shots to remain effective.
