The Proper Diet That Should Be Followed By A Lactating Mother
A breastfeeding mother needs much more nutritious and healthy food than the rest of her family; because she shares most of that nutrition with her child through her breast milk. Therefore, it is mandatory that she receives food containing all the necessary vitamins, minerals, proteins and carbohydrates.
A breastfeeding mother should also eat high-calorie foods, because after childbirth she needs at least 500 calories more than normal every day. Utmost care should be taken in maintaining a balanced diet for a breastfeeding mother, which is best decided by a trained midwife so that both mother and child remain healthy and energetic.
Nutrients Needed by a Nursing Mother
Calcium is an essential nutrient that is needed to strengthen the weakened bones of the mother, also important for the growth of the baby’s bones. Although milk is the main source of calcium; it is also found adequately in dairy products like yogurt and cheese, vegetables like broccoli, leafy greens, and tofu, and fruits like oranges and almonds; which are believed to be essential elements of the nursing mother’s daily diet. Iron is also needed to prevent a new mother’s anemia which can occur due to blood loss during childbirth; thus, iron-rich foods like chicken, fish, or different types of beans should also be included in his diet. Vitamin C is needed to absorb excess iron in the blood; therefore, citrus juices should be consumed daily after each meal. Breakfast should ideally contain grain-based foods like pasta or bread, which have a high amount of B vitamins or folic acid. Certain fruits and legumes may also provide enough folic acid. A woman should eat plenty of fresh fruits and vegetables, which can provide the necessary amounts of important minerals. Consuming enough fish, eggs and a small amount of butter can effectively prevent vitamin D deficiency in nursing mothers. Since mothers are too busy with their newborns, they often try to neglect their foods in the middle of meals; therefore, healthy snacks like boiled eggs, dried fruits, nuts, yogurt or cheese can be given to them to fill this gap in their meals.
Food habits to be avoided by a breastfeeding mother
The consumption of coffee, cold drinks or other caffeine-rich products should also be avoided in the postnatal diet. If the mother or baby seem to be allergic to a food, it will be wiser to avoid them altogether. The habit of drinking alcohol is also completely prohibited by all doctors, to ensure the good health of the breastfed child. A breastfeeding mother should never try to control her diet to lose weight as this could weaken her physically as she needs maximum strength to raise her child properly.
