Do You Know Your Scrapbook Lingo?

A lot of people say, sure, I’d love to scrap if I had nothing to do but cut and paste stuff all day. The real waste of time isn’t making an album, it’s taking pictures, dropping them off at the store, picking them up, putting them in a box, and then wasting many hours trying to find an image specific months later. Why take pictures if you’re just going to put them in the closet like cattle? To make an album is to preserve memories for future generations. With scrapbooks, people organize their photos, keepsakes, and keepsakes into themes and create mini-stories using safe materials to ensure the photos will last for a long time. Simply put, scrapbooks are more than fun times with friends or that fulfilling feeling you get when you create something. Scrapbooks are also an investment in your family and future generations.

Find scrapbooking time

Alright, so how do you save time? Don’t think you have to finish an album in one sitting. Most people are short on time with a long to-do list, so their goal is to create a page here and there that will eventually complete a themed scrapbook. As with anything you want to accomplish, you need to schedule time and break your project down into small steps. You can sort the photos while the kids are napping or playing. Dream up themes and come up with design ideas while you’re on the go and bombarded with color combinations. If you have a toddler or toddlers, you might find it hard to schedule time to breathe, let alone scrapbook, but there’s always time, even if all you can spare is fifteen minutes here or ten minutes there, at least you can get a little done, like sorting images or placing one on a page. Once you’ve experienced the album rewards, you’ll find that time magically appears.

Scrape the jargon

Acid free

As the wood goes through the process that turns it into paper, acid is added to help break down the wood. Once acid is added to a process, it doesn’t just stop working, you have to neutralize it. So acid in paper, still alive and active, is a real enemy of photographs because it will destroy your photos over time, which is why acid-free is such a common term in this business. Everything from paper to glue should be acid-free. A “buffered” paper is a paper in which additives, such as calcium carbonate, are used to neutralize the acid.

pH

It’s a term you’re probably familiar with if you make homemade soap or maintain a swimming pool. pH refers to the acidity level of the item you are testing, in this case the paper. The scale runs from 0 to 14, with 0 to 6 being too acidic, 7 neutral, and anything above 7 has too much alkalinity. To give you a few examples, battery acid has a pH of 1, milk measure 7, and ammonia has a pH of 12. Because scrapbooking pros want to stay away from acid in their paper, anything with a pH of 7 or higher is good.

Lignin

It looks like a savory berry, but it’s not. Lignin is naturally present in trees as they grow, but when a tree is made into paper, lignin is responsible for its yellowing and brittleness over time.

Photo-Safe

Photo-safe is a term you’ll often see on packaging or in instructions. This means that embellishment, paper or glue will not damage your photographs. It’s often another term for acid-free, but in any case, make sure everything you use, from paper to pencils, had one term or the other on the packaging.

Sheet protectors

Finished scrapbook pages are often slipped into sheet protectors before being inserted into the final album. Like all items you use, make sure they are acid-free. The variety of polypropylene sold in grocery and office supply stores is not acid-free. There are also smaller protectors for smaller items that you want to add to the album, but don’t want to put adhesive on. With these elements, like a very old letter, you would place it in the protector and then glue it to the page.

Cardstock

Card stock is a heavier, more studied paper, making it an ideal medium for pages with heavier embellishments or more photographs.

Adhesives

These are used to attach photos and other items to your scrapbook pages. There are many different types of adhesives used in scrapbooks for the different elements used in a scrapbook (remember, this country was founded on freedom of choice, so newbies, don’t roll your eyes with all the choices with you .) Don’t forget to make sure the adhesive is acid-free and be sure to note whether you’re using permanent or non-permanent glue. Once you have it in place it is there to stay with permanent glue, while with non-permanent glue you can pick up the item and fix it somewhere else. Other types of adhesives include duct tape, double-sided tape, liquid and stick glue, and spray adhesive. Spray adhesive is excellent for bonding larger items. Because you spray it on, there’s a thin, even coat of adhesive, so when you place the item in the scrapbook, you don’t have hills and valleys of glue underneath. You can also use sticky tabs which come in different shapes, large and small.

Photo corners

Photo corners are another type of adhesive, but unlike other photo corners, they are placed in front of your photo and used as a frame to hold the photo in place. They come in many different sizes and colors.

Logging

Journaling refers to captions under photographs that give information about the image. It’s the heart and soul of the album because it gives us the story behind the image. Journaling can be a few words, a paragraph, or even an entire column, and it can be done by hand, computer, or any other method that allows you to give the details.

Embellishment

An embellishment is a decoration or design added to any part of the scrapbook for the purpose of adding character, color and style. These are things you add to reinforce the theme and tell the story. Stickers are a popular embellishment, but you can add anything from dried flowers to ribbon. The embellishment and creative design of the page is what differentiates a scrapbook from a photo album.

Punch

It’s not a fruity drink, but more of a punch gone wild. The hand-held form comes in a range of wacky shapes and patterns that you can “punched” onto your pages or, if you’re really creative, onto your images.

Cutouts

Cutouts are like paper punches on steroids. These are metal dies (molds) used to cut sheets of paper into specific shapes.

Straight scissors

Straight-edged scissors are your basic household scissors.

Scissors with decorative edge

Inside the straight scissors of the standard scissors, the decorative edge scissors are usually plastic with ridged or scalloped sharp edges to give pages, images, and design, rather than a straight line.

exacto knife

If you’re unfamiliar with the term, you’re probably familiar with sight. Exacto knives are metal pen-like shapes with a very sharp tiny razor blade on the edge that is inserted at an angle giving it knife capabilities that are sharp and precise. It is a very precise and smaller version of a utility knife. With this type of knife, it even acts like tweezers in that you can pick up thicker pieces of paper with the tip, which is useful especially after adding adhesive.

craft knife

Crave knives are used to create clean, straight lines. Another cutting device is the rotary cutter, which is shaped like a pizza cutter, but much smaller. It’s great for working around corners. Any design-related job or project (graphic design, magazine layout, and advertising) relies on image accuracy, and since scrapbooks are a form of communication through pictures and images, you too will depend heavily from your cutting devices.

Models

Patterns can mean many things, but all relate to serving as a guide to create a shape on paper. A page template is a guide giving you the page settings to create a page size. For example, if you are creating a 5×7 scrapbook, you can use a template that would allow you to create more than one page from a standard sheet of paper. Templates are also placed on the photos, which when cut according to the template will give your photo a new shape (like a heart). Templates are also used to beautify pages.

gel pens

Gel pens won’t bleed on you. They’re so good at it that when gel pens are used in everyday life, like writing checks, it’s the only ink a criminal can’t handle (i.e. i.e. transferring your signature from one document to another). -free superpowers make it an ideal choice for journaling.

Colouring pencils

As with all art, crayons have many uses, from drawing decorations to creating colored borders or text.

Cropping

I’ve been growing for over a decade, but I always think of a corn stalk when I hear that term. You have a picture in front of you. Maybe it’s your dog but you took him to a playpen and there’s a trash can on one side that you’d like to eliminate from the picture and maybe there’s too much space top of the photo. With cropping, you can move the parameter of your photo inward, up or down to get rid of “undesirables” such as space and garage. It will not resize your photo. If you started with a 5×7, you will still have a 5×7 after cropping, but the remaining objects will appear larger and closer.

Digital albums

When your album is designed and stored online, you have a digital album. These are growing in popularity. These can be created in PhotoShop or even Word documents, PDF files or even web pages.
