Do you remember Carlin Sunday? Pugs seem to have fallen out of favor these days. But when I was a boy in the North East of England we used to have pug peas also called maple peas, black peas or pigeon peas once a year on the Sunday before Christmas Sunday. Twigs. It was an annual tradition in much of the north and on Carlin Sunday even local pubs and clubs offered free bowls of it to their patrons.

These small black peas were mentioned in Elizabethan times, and in all likelihood, pugs were cultivated by monks in the early Middle Ages, in the gardens of the monastery. At that time, beans and peas formed a large part of the staple diet. The six-foot tall plants produce bountiful harvests and can be eaten fresh or dried for use during the winter months.

There was even a nursery rhyme that mentioned them.

According to an old tale, Carlins even saved the good citizens of Newcastle upon Tyne from starvation during the English Civil War. At this time Newcastle was a Royalist town supporting King Charles and a Scottish army crossed the border and swept south with the intention of capturing Newcastle and securing coal supplies on behalf of their allies the Parliamentarians. Newcastle was not easy to break however and the city was besieged. The siege of 1644 lasted from July to October and at one point supplies ran out and people were starving. Just when things were going badly, a Dutch ship saved them by avoiding the blockade and reaching the harbor with its cargo of carlings.

My mother used to serve the peas hot, sprinkled with salt and pepper and we would add a generous swig of vinegar before devouring them greedily.

Recipe.

1 lb pugs

2 ounces of butter

A good pinch of salt

Vinegar

Method.

Place the Pugs in a bowl, cover with water, add a pinch of salt and let soak overnight.

After soaking, drain and put in a pot of boiling water for 20 minutes. (Boil longer if you like them softer)

Heat the butter in a pan, drain the peas, add them to the pan and sauté for 2 to 3 minutes.

Serve hot with salt, pepper and vinegar.

Or if you wish, you can serve them warm, sprinkled with brown sugar and a good dash of rum.

The pug recipe that follows has absolutely nothing to do with my mum, but I spotted it on an Irish Seed Savers Association website and thought it would be worth a try. The recipe was sent to the site by Lorraine Marshall and I have reproduced it below.

Pug Pea Fritters

4 oz dried whole pug peas

1/2 tablespoon olive oil

1 egg

2 ounces self-rising wholemeal flour

1/8 qt (75 ml) milk (I use soy milk)

sea ​​salt

freshly ground black pepper

oil for shallow frying

Cover the peas with boiling water and let them soak for several hours, then drain and rinse them. Put in a saucepan with more water and simmer until tender – about 45 minutes.

Drain and mash them (I find the pug peas cook unevenly some are still tough so I ask my husband to mash them with a fork!).

Add oil, egg, flour and milk, salt and pepper, mix well.

Fry in a little oil in dessert spoonfuls until crispy and golden on both sides. Drain well on absorbent paper.
