Capuchin Monkeys As Pets
Facts:
There are nine different types of capuchin species. This is the most common, The white-headed capuchin, also known as the white-faced or white-throated monkey. The capuchin monkey can live in groups of up to 30 monkeys, and each monkey must always have a monkey companion. Capuchin monkeys weigh between 3 and 9 pounds. A typical diet for capuchin monkeys includes fruits, insects, leaves, and small birds. They are particularly good at catching frogs and cracking nuts, and it is suspected that they may also feed on small mammals. Females spend their entire lives with their conspecifics, while males migrate to different groups several times during their lifetime. the female produces her first offspring around the age of 6-7 years. Females give birth every two years after a gestation period of 160 to 180 days. The female has only one baby, but may have twins. Adult male capuchins rarely participate in the care of the young. Males can mate with females when they are 7-8 years old. Females become fully mature at 4 years old and males at 8 years old. In captivity, capuchins can reach 45 years and older, although life in the wild is only 15 to 25 years. Capuchins are considered the most intelligent New World monkeys. Capuchins are kept as exotic pets. They are also trained to be useful. These monkeys can help brighten the lives of people with disabilities by providing companionship and friendship. Many people with disabilities are left alone for many hours of the day because their families cannot be with them at all times. Young monkeys are adopted by families and raised as a child. Due to the way they are raised, they become affectionate and contented. When the monkey is old enough, it is sent to the Helping Hands Training Center in Boston for formal training.
Advice for animals:
Here is their diet:

10-12 pieces of dipped New World Monkey Cookies (Mazuri, Spectrum,
Purina, etc.) or can be offered dry

increase palatability when converting from poor diets.

1 oz canned primate food (cut into small pieces)

1/4 slice of whole wheat bread cut into cubes
Occasional cricket (the cricket should be sprinkled with vionate) as a treat. Some will really appreciate it, others won’t know what to do with it.
Other meats such as cooked fish, chicken, turkey, beef are sometimes enjoyed. Offer teaspoon-sized portions. Minimize the consumption of human sweets, desserts, dairy products, carbohydrates and fats. It is acceptable to give the monkey a human child vitamin tablet 2-3 times a week.
Avoid foods that have been fortified with iron such as fortified cereals. Other occasional treats: soaked raisins, other types of fruit – daily treat serving should be less than 1 teaspoon in volume!
* The ingredients for the lettuce mixture are placed in a chopper and mixed. Use long, thin pieces.
Capuchins need large spaces and lots of toys. Always buy new things and change bedrooms or living spaces because they may get bored. When buying a capuchin, it is advisable to buy two. These animals do not need to be accompanied (just with humans), they need a monkey playmate or they will become very stressful. Capuchin monkeys need an outdoor enclosure because they will die without much sunlight. Buy toys tested safe for babies and toddlers. Take your monkey for walks using a collar or halter and leash. Although your monkey will probably choose to ride on your shoulder, you need this leash to catch him if he starts walking into something he shouldn’t. Find a good veterinarian to treat your monkey’s health issues. Your capuchin will need a full health check once a year, with a TB test, parasite exam and full blood screening. Your local vet may have special vaccination requirements for monkeys, so you will need to call to find a vet who is knowledgeable about monkey care. If you’re having trouble finding one, call the nearest zoo and see if they can recommend a vet.
WARNING:
Capuchins are very clever at being able to escape from cages, collars and leashes, so check with other monkey owners to see how they manage to protect these items from monkeys.
Keep all medications, matches, lighters, etc. out of reach of your monkey, as you would with a small child
