Special Fertility Diet

As several studies have concluded, a body mass index (BMI) that is too high (>30) or too low (<18.5) can lead to hormonal imbalance and is therefore considered a major contributor to infertility. My BMI, however, has always been normal (around 20) and I think I'm generally very healthy, but I struggled with infertility for many years. It wasn't until I met a reproductive endocrinologist that I finally started to wonder if my diet was healthy.

I knew that too much exercise could negatively impact my ability to conceive, so for the past 10-15 years I had been careful to only exercise in moderation. I didn’t drink, smoke or take drugs. And I considered my diet to be quite healthy – lots of fiber, fruits, nuts, seeds, bran, oatmeal, lean meat (if I decided to have any). I also ate potatoes, feta cheese and the occasional veg to introduce some variation to my menu.

Although I never bought sweets and only rarely bought bread, I must admit that I never said no to the bagels or donuts that my co-workers sometimes brought to work for everyone to share. I didn’t just take a bite or two either. Still, I managed to maintain my 115-120 pound weight by offsetting those calorie splurges at work by eating nothing but fruit for dinner at home. Weight has never been an issue.

So, I was surprised when my reproductive endocrinologist diagnosed me with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS). It was an obesity disorder, after all. Or so I thought. I soon learned that PCOS had more to do with insulin resistance than actual weight. With my frequent sugar consumption, no wonder I suffer from it too.

The first thing my doctor did after hearing me describe my meals for the week was to recommend a change in diet. He suggested I stay away from sweets, rice, bread, pasta, tortillas, corn, potatoes, and fruit for at least six days a week. I could then have a day when I could eat whatever I wanted. (He didn’t believe in the sustainability of overly restrictive diets.) Recognizing that fruit played an important role in my old diet, I didn’t know what to eat from then on. My doctor assured me that I had plenty of options: meat, vegetables and legumes of all kinds.

My doctor thought my eating habits had a direct impact on my chances of a successful pregnancy and urged me to follow his diet carefully. I did it. Since a few weeks. I even lost weight without trying, just replacing fruit with salads. Eventually the cysts disappeared and I was finally able to conceive.

While following this simple fertility diet, I did my own research. One of the studies I read involved the findings of Jeffrey B. Russell, MD, of the Delaware Institute for Reproductive Medicine, who evaluated the diets of various women undergoing in vitro fertilization (IVF). He found that the majority of those whose diet consisted of less than 10% protein and more than 60% carbohydrates produced poor quality embryos. Conversely, those who ate high amounts of protein (at least 25% of their diet) and relatively low amounts of carbohydrates (no more than 40% of their diet) had higher quality eggs and embryos.

Other studies confirm that a low-carb diet is a viable treatment option for conditions such as PCOS (at least when it comes to reducing symptoms), as it lowers insulin levels and helps to normalize their weight. Controlling blood sugar through a healthy diet and exercise can also help treat gestational diabetes mellitus. Whether or not you are at risk for any of these conditions, if you want to increase your chances of getting pregnant, you may want to reconsider your diet. If you’re consuming too many carbs, cutting them down might just be the secret to kick-starting your fertility.
