Getting Older and Staying Healthy
I always say “You get old when you stop going, no matter how old you are.” I have sometimes seen 25-year-olds have less energy and drive than some octogenarians I know.
That said, I know I normally write about fitting your skinny jeans, the best supplements to take, and boosting your self-esteem. But today I would like to write about how I am getting older and taking care of myself. This was prompted by the fact that my siblings and I have just commemorated the 10th anniversary of my father’s passing. He would have been 93 on April 4. Remembering, I realized certainly how much I missed him, but also how many of his special qualities I am proud to have myself – such as his zest for life, his enthusiasm, his love of dancing and his ability to work hard for desires.
Next month is of course Mother’s Day and I’d like to reflect a bit more on my dear mom and then mom’s. You can still have your parents and they can be healthy and active even as they get older. Today I thought I’d share about staying healthy during the “golden years”
My mother will be 87 in June and she struggles daily for her health. After a month-long stay in hospital last year after suffering from severe pneumonia, I have seen a marked decrease in his vitality since then. She lives in Canada and is well taken care of by my sister – a retired nurse. However, she lives on her own and we all worry about whether she is getting all the nutrition, social interaction and exercise she needs.
You may face a similar situation with your aging parents or relatives. It can be a long and lonely journey for them as their health continues to decline. It’s important that the seniors in your life get the proper nutrition to help them stay strong – physically and mentally.
You may find them complaining of a lack of appetite or not being able to eat like before. Often this is because their digestive system lacks the proper amount of enzymes and stomach acid needed to properly break down food – especially raw vegetables and proteins. I would recommend encouraging them to eat steamed, sautéed or sautéed vegetables, cooked or baked fruits, and easier to digest proteins like fish, chicken, turkey, and seafood. I recommend usually at least 6-8 oz. of protein per day. Adding a digestive enzyme would also help them. This helps them break down their food so they can get the nutrients from the food they eat. A herbal formula called Triphala works great for balancing the bowels, or 500-1200mg or Magnesium at bedtime also proves beneficial. You might suggest adding more fiber to their diet as well – bran or a fiber supplement would work well. And there’s always the old standby – prunes.
Exercise is good for everyone – even with increasing limitations your elderly loved one may experience – a little movement is vital. Whether one is chair-bound, arthritic, or facing other physical challenges, there is always something – however small – that can be done. Also, for seniors with arthritis, there are many “safer” alternative anti-inflammatory supplements available to the many prescription drugs often found in their medicine cabinet. However, always check for any interactions between their medication and the supplements used.
Wonderful new research in neuroscience is discovering that the human brain actually expands as we age and not the other way around as we have been led to believe. Just think of what we could accomplish with little new knowledge – a chance to really change the way we not only see older people, but also the way we will actually age – extraordinary.
Finally, studies have been conducted on the world’s oldest population in Okinawa, Japan. They attribute their healthy aging not to their healthy diet mostly from the sea, or exercises like Tai Chi, or even good genes. But this is rather due to their social connection with others. It seems like staying connected is so vital for longevity. When we think of the many older people who are considered “locked in,” it would be a wonderful idea to encourage them to get involved with others – family, new and old friends, and community churches and synagogues. This will not only increase their peace of mind, but encourage a long and healthy life.
Or how about even getting them interested in the internet? Why not ? There are so many social media resources online these days that yes, even your elderly parent might be interested. Over the weekend I just saw a report about a band called “Young At Heart”. It’s a band of old people who travel across the country singing – not country, classical or folk songs, but rock and roll and not Elvis Presley either, but what about Led Zepplin or the Stones? every minute.
Again, “You get old when you stop going, it doesn’t matter how old you are” So keep going and stay ACTIVE – physically, mentally and spiritually.
