Waxy Maize Review

With the explosion of the internet, the fitness industry has evolved at a very rapid pace. As soon as new ideas are brought to the public’s attention, everyone in bodybuilding or physical training rushes to test them. The “new kid on the block” right now is waxy corn. For those of you who might not be into hardcore bodybuilding or physical training supplementation, you might be wondering what it is.

Waxy corn is a flavorless natural corn starch (although some brands sell flavored versions). I personally don’t mind the taste at all and I use it multiple times throughout the day in place of solid carbs when training for lean muscle mass. So why is cornstarch so powerful? It has a higher molecular weight and lower blood osmolality than dextrose or maltodextorse, which for years was the preferred source of post-workout carbs. Thus, it is absorbed very quickly in the small intestine and brings all the nutrients with which it was consumed (proteins, bcaa, creatine) into the muscles more quickly.

With other carbohydrate sources, these nutrients spend too much time in the stomach and break down, so fewer of them are available for recovery or their various uses. So we can transport nutrients to our muscles faster, recover faster and get a better “pump”. So it’s all good, right? Do you remember what I said about the Internet? Well, things get messy and confused and that’s how it is with waxy corn.

I don’t really understand why people disparage waxy corn, I mean the science behind it is so solid. I think it’s honestly because it’s new. Let’s break it down for a second. People say it’s a “high molecular weight” carb. You should remember from high school chemistry that all molecular weight is, is the weight of a molecule. Simple really, right? Compare it to dextrose. Now, I’ve seen various studies on this, but the molecular weight of dextrose is around 150 to 325, somewhere in that range. The lowest molecular weight I’ve seen of it is around 2000!

Another benefit is osmolality, right? The osmolality of well blood is around 300. Most commercial products contain an osmolality of around 10-15. It’s crazy.

Think about it. We’ve all had very high carb meals, right? You know how you get bloated and your stomach gets heavy? Well, it’s because of the blood osmoality level. Nothing forces these carbohydrates into the small intestine (where about 80% of carbohydrate metabolism occurs).

So this causes all of your nutrients to skyrocket into your small intestine. I mean I’m starving 20 minutes after taking it. Oh it’s a carb you say? Well, let’s look at post-workout insulin. Meanwhile, your body is dying to replenish muscle glycogen, so which option would be best? To replenish it as quickly as possible or wait for a period of 60-75 minutes. Obviously the first since the sooner we replenish our muscle glycogen, the sooner our body stops burning muscle tissue to recover. Not to mention that the insulin spike happens so quickly. You owe it to yourself to watch waxy corn carefully.
