To prioritize- Decide which assignments are the most important, such as those due the next day. They are the ones to approach first. Time is running out, so make sure the focus is on what’s most important.

Tests- Studying for tests requires gradual study, rather than last-minute cramming. Help your child understand that it is much easier to learn and assimilate gradually than to try to remember things that you just memorize at the last minute. Encourage them to discuss their topics and ask their teachers and parents questions if they are unclear about some aspect of the topic. Flash cards and quizzes are other useful ways to study and absorb information.

Nutrition- The foods one ingests also play an important role in how one learns and absorbs material. Eating a meal high in protein, good carbs, and fat will help maintain balanced blood sugar levels, which will make studying and homework exercise much easier. It also naturally boosts serotonin in the brain, which improves mood and creates a less responsive individual. Good nutrition equals better stamina and a sense of well-being. A calm individual will always perform better. Thinking fasting often suffers. The brain needs adequate nutrition to stay in the learning zone. A protein snack (real food) before homework will increase their ability to concentrate and retain information

Exercise- Always schedule time outside to exercise before or after you do your homework. It burns off excess energy, quiets the mind and relaxes the person to sit back and concentrate. Remember, homework is not a punishment- Therefore, make it a pleasant experience. Explain to your child that homework is about learning interesting and exciting things. Not all subjects may feel this at first, but if you discuss it in a lively way, it can pique their interest in the topic. Everything can be made more interesting if approached correctly. The goal is to make learning fun.

Help with homework- Naturally, there will be times when your child will ask for help with homework and that’s fine. Remember that homework is for your child, not you. It’s about getting them to think about what they’ve learned in class and using their own minds to apply the answers. Discuss the issues with them and always ask, “What do you think? Let them tell you, rather than provide you with the answers. This way you will be helpful without doing the work and they will feel confident that they did it themselves.

Above all, let your children know that learning and education is something that makes them more interesting. This allows them to discuss many topics with their friends and family. It sets the stage for a future that includes topics and ideas that they may want to learn more about so they can pursue their dreams in life.

It’s all about perspective. Making homework less painful is the goal. Understand that there is a purpose to homework and that is to make them see things from all sides and angles. It all depends on how you, as a parent, also approach homework. Never treat homework as a punishment, “Go do your homework NOW!” but as an opportunity to put his learning to good use.
