12 Secrets to Virility by Al Sears, MD
The modern world and its way of life are waging a silent war on the masculinity of modern man. The Introduction sets out the problem. Men in the developed world have a decreased sperm count. Erectile dysfunction rates earn drug companies billions of dollars. Prostates grow while libidos decrease. According to Dr. Sears, 10% of his male patients have more estrogen than testosterone.
The first chapter rightly touches on the topic of testosterone. Although often unjustly blamed for violence committed by men, it is what keeps us healthy and strong. Declining testosterone levels cause “grumpy old man” syndrome.
Another cause of low testosterone can be a low fat diet.
Additionally, various contaminants in our environment reduce testosterone and increase estrogen levels. Men are supposed to have estrogen, but when our estrogen levels rise too high relative to our testosterone, we are no longer manly men.
It is then that we begin to suffer from many physical and emotional health problems. Lack of sexual desire is one of them, but so are obesity and chronic fatigue. We should have ten times more testosterone than estrogen.
As he does throughout this book, after describing a problem, its causes and effects, he reviews the solutions. It recommends various supplements and activities.
Some of them are questionable. For example, some authorities would not recommend taking DHEA because it is a hormone. Some claim that the herb Tribulus Terrestris does not increase testosterone levels, as is often claimed.
However, DIM and its precursor Indole-3-Carbinol help break down estrogen.
He goes on to rail against the modern trend of eating large amounts of carbohydrates, especially from grain sources. This is true for the general population who eat hamburger buns, pizza crust, spaghetti, rice, beans, sodas, etc. This is also true of the dietetic population that consumes whole-wheat breads and pastas.
We need carbs from vegetables and fruits – and men need protein from meat, fish and dairy, including the fats that usually come with animal protein. Some fats are essential for good health.
Exercise is also important for gaining and maintaining muscle mass. Dr. Sears advocates a progressive sprint program he calls PACE, rather than the modern trend of long, slow “cardio.” In addition, he advises doing calisthenics and taking certain supplements such as creatine.
Several chapters deal with one of the main health problems of an aging man – a growing prostate. Maintaining sexual ability is closely related to this.
This is followed by chapters on inflammation that causes joint problems and prevents loss of brain function.
Dr. Sears is not afraid to take on the conventional medical establishment or the alternative health establishment. It makes it refreshing to read.
There’s a lot of advice here, and certainly a lot of men won’t appreciate it. They know they should exercise more, but they don’t. Men who are ready to exercise need to know which type will help them the most, rather than wasting their time and possibly damaging their hearts by jogging long distances.
He recommends many different supplements, but does not claim that they are magic bullets. They must interact with a good diet (eliminate carbohydrates from cereals, increase the intake of healthy proteins and fruits and vegetables) and exercise.
I eat a diet similar to what he recommends, have started exercising and taking some of the supplements he suggests. I’m not the stallion I used to be anymore, but I feel better and look better (I lost 28 lbs).
I have no doubt that men who follow his program will have a big advantage over those who don’t in the years to come.
