The Great Gama never lost a match and he participated in around 5000 wrestling matches. To this day, he is considered by many to be the “GREATEST” wrestler in history.

What’s even more amazing is the Great Gama workout.

Before detailing him, let me give you a quick idea of ​​his physical prowess.

Great Gama’s strength was noticed at an early age. When he was only 10 years old, he had already participated in a national (Indian) strength and fitness competition. At this young age, he was already able to perform 500 bethaks and 500 dands. (a type of push-up exercise for upper body strength)

He was also wrestling every day, even though he had only competed when he was 15 years old.

What are these exercises you might ask?

Well, a bethak is similar to a full squat. You do a bethak from a standing position…your feet at 45 degree angles. In a squat, you roll onto the balls of your feet, lifting your heels off the floor. It’s not an easy move, but it’s a great leg builder/conditioner. You should do around 60 or 80 bethaks.

In the days of the Grand Gama, well-known champions made between two and three thousand bethaks a day.

Wrestlers often performed up to 1000 bethaks. At the very least, a wrestler would make between five and eight cents a day. (It’s a great workout and it doesn’t require any equipment, just your own body weight.)

As he grew older, the Great Gama’s training would increase to wrestle 40 wrestlers, 5000 bethaks, and 3000 dands. All of this happened on a daily basis.

It’s easy to see why the Great Gama was considered unbeatable, it’s a very grueling workout. These incredible training exercises have been the foundation of all of India’s great wrestlers and as writer Percy Longhurst has written… “The Indian training system has results beyond the development of great strength. ; it creates the most remarkable powers of endurance while increasing agility in time.”

Finally, in 1909, the Great Gama won the title of Wrestling Champion of India 1909.

He then travels around Europe with a circus of Indian wrestlers, taking on all comers. As a result, the Great Gama defeated some of the most well-known wrestlers of the era.

He challenged many greats and was willing to relinquish his title if defeated. Some of these great champions were Japanese judo champion Taro Miyake, Georges Hackenschmidt from Russia and Frank Gotch from the United States.
