Journey to Weight Loss and Better Health – Weight, Kids, Cancer, Success

Recently, my job has taken me to read many blogs about weight loss and health improvement. One day after reading the blogs, a neighbor saw my fitness photo in my husband’s wallet. He wanted to know why my husband was carrying a photo of another woman. I had changed so much! I was unrecognizable to one of our closest neighbors! It made me want to take up the challenge and get back in shape. This is my story.

A bit of general information

At the age of 20, I decided to get back in shape. I train in the morning (4:30 to be exact) and I eat healthy. I read all the fitness magazines and I looked great. Then everything changed.

Like many women, children arrived. My solid 115 pound, 5 foot rock has faded. In its place came a 135-pound blob. Now 15 pounds doesn’t seem like a lot and for years I denied it myself. However, I lost muscle weight and replaced it with fat. Consequently, I went from 12% body fat to 30% body fat.

I married my husband weighing 95 pounds. Yes, I am so small. At 34, I was 40 pounds heavier than on my wedding day and it was depressing.

When I decided to change, I couldn’t remember what I ate to get into this hard body. I racked my brains and couldn’t think of anything. I vaguely remember protein bars to add muscle but that’s it.

So I turned to my blogs. The blogs were constantly saying to eat natural foods. It’s like becoming a vegetarian but no longer eating things as close to nature as possible. That suited me; Anyway, I don’t like pre-packaged foods.

I started eating well but was still exhausted from shopping with my daughters. So, I decided I had to add the dreaded exercise.

Exercising after cancer

Ok, so now I have to mention that I was diagnosed with breast cancer at age 32. I haven’t exercised since. It was a scary proposition for me and I guess after two years my cancer excuse is pretty worn out.

That’s when I start walking. I decided to walk 1 mile a day. There happens to be a one-mile track near my house, so I don’t have to do mindless laps around a track.

The first day, I felt like I was going to die. It didn’t seem like the best idea, but I kept going back. Then somewhere around the third week, I found myself thinking that it wasn’t so bad. It was getting easier. I even added an extra turn!

New clothes for the new me

After about a month of walking, I decide to treat myself to sports clothes. I’m familiar with women’s workout clothes, so I know I can buy a shirt for $7. I’m so excited, I splurge and buy two.

Walking and diet have changed the way I feel. I’m not the blonde bombshell I was at 22, but what is 34? Instead, I’m a fit mom ready to take on the world.
