A Guide to Scheduling A Newborn Photography Shoot at Your Home

For a 33 year old who has no kids, I sure know a lot about kids! How, I ask? Baby photo! I have been a children’s photographer for over 13 years. They are my specialty, my joy and my life.

When I started photographing newborns, I had to learn how to hold a baby, soothe a baby, stay calm and familiarize myself with facial expressions. I often look at them and think, “I wonder why I’m smiling like that.” And then you hear a sound… from the diaper… a wet sound. I imagine parents, other photographers, and anyone who works with children can relate to this.

After a few years of photography again, I decided to create a guide to help new parents and photographers to help prepare for the photo shoot if the photo shoot is done at the clients’ home. All of my newborn photo shoots are done in my clients’ homes because it’s the most comfortable place for a growing family.

Without further ado, here is the guide born from my frequently asked questions about a newborn photography shoot…

1. When should we plan the new photo session? Schedule your newborn photo shoot within the first two weeks of the due date. This is only a tentative date and will probably change depending on the arrival of the child. If you have a C-section, the date is pretty much set unless the baby comes first.

It is better to catch the babies at about 5-14 days while they are sleeping and have a new look. That said, there are no guarantees with newborns. They do what they want. I took pictures at 6 days. Some cooperate and some don’t. I took pictures at 4 weeks. Some cooperate and some don’t. Anyway, they are all wonderful!

2. What happens if my child is late? Contact your photographer and play the date by ear. If the baby is early, don’t worry about contacting your photographer immediately. Enjoy the new member of your family! Contact them in the next couple of days and let them know your baby is here.

3. What temperature should the house be? The day of the photo shoot suggests to have the house at a good warm temperature. We will be sweaty but the baby will be comfortable. However, you don’t need the heat during the summer. Little ones don’t like it too hot or too cold.

Keep in mind that most of the poses will be of the baby in his diaper, naked, or what you have discussed with your photographer. Walk around your house and think about settings/backgrounds that could be better in terms of lighting. Usually, photographers like to set up in the room with the most natural light. But also important rooms like the nursery, your bedroom, the living room, and the garden if it’s a nice day.

4. When should I feed my baby? Try and time it so that you are almost done with the food or completely done by the time the photographer arrives. A happy baby equals a sleeping baby. Sleepless babies are awesome! Also, keep in mind that we can feed the baby a little outside of his schedule to keep him calm.

If you want your baby in a wrap, a diaper cover, or possibly naked, then I suggest you take off their clothes (but keep them in their diaper!), wrap them in a blanket, then start feeding. The less we move them after having a full belly, the better.

5. What should I do if my child is asleep right before the photo shoot? Sometimes your baby will sleep before you arrive and before feeding. Try to keep them changing or maybe a nice bath. You want your child to be tired during the photo shoot, not before

6. How long will the photoshoot last? The length of time depends on the photographer and the child. I finished the photo shoots again in an hour and more than 4 hours. If the child is awake during the photo session, that’s okay! Pictures of your alert, awake baby are magical!

7. What props should I have ready and does the photographer bring? Most of the gear and hats that I personally use in my photography pictures belong to the child. The print will have a different meaning if you use your own hats, blankets, books and/or other props. Also, do not forget about all the gifts that the child will receive. Using gifts from friends and family makes these photos more special.
