House Training A Dog: Four Steps To Successful Dog Toilet Training

House training a dog doesn’t have to be a long and smelly process. In fact, successful dog toilet training can be done in just a few days when you do it right.

My springer spaniel, Muggins was only 8 weeks old when we brought him home, but by immediately focusing on potty training, we were accident free in no time. On the third day she was with us, she walked up to the sliding glass door and knocked on it with her white paw. I opened the door, and trotted out onto the lawn and squatted. That’s how easy it can be to train a dog.

My current Springer, Ducky, learned to go out the doggy door and into his yard to do his thing at the same time. We were accident free in a few days.

Toilet training for dogs has nothing to do with toilets. It also has nothing to do with rubbing a dog’s nose in pee or poop, as old-school dog training suggested. Dog toilet training can be done in four easy steps:

1. Easy puppy house training requires observing your dog as much as possible. Dogs give you signs when they need to pee or poop. They can beat or moan. They may begin to sniff intensely. Watching your dog carefully not only prevents accidents, it is the first step to teach potty habits.

2. Always take your puppy out after feeding time and every half hour (for puppies) to every hour (for adult dogs). Many dogs relieve themselves immediately after eating. Take advantage of this is a good training strategy. Taking your dog regularly reduces the chance of accidents. Take your dog outside when you are pretty sure that your dog needs to go. Your dog is doing his thing, so apply step 3.

3. If you want quick results, you need to pour praise. Praise your dog profusely every time he pees or poops outside. I mean you go crazy with compliments. This is not the time for decoration. If you want a pee and poop free home, you need to clap your hands and say, “What a pee.” (Hint: you don’t have to call it pee. Dogs don’t care what they call it. We say to Ducky, “Cop a squat.”) You can also include treats as a form of praise. Use small, healthy, and you can give your dog or puppy a treat every time he takes his bath outside.

4. Crate training can help you with step 4 of the training process. Limit your new pet until you are sure that your training efforts have been successful. Leaving your dog in a crate, for example, when you leave the house, is a great way to limit the chance of small accidents. Dogs do not like to mess with their “dens”, and the crate, to your dog, is his den. When you are at home and the dog is out of the crate, restrict your dog or puppy to whatever room you are in. This helps you do step 1, watching your dog.

House training a dog can be so simple – as simple as 1, 2, 3 (and 4). When you follow these steps, you will be a, excuse the pun, whiz at dog toilet training.
