A Beginner’s Guide To Properly Brushing A Yorkshire Terrier’s Hair
Grooming is an essential part of dog care. Any breed of dog, no matter the age, needs to be regularly brushed, bathed and groomed to maintain health and cleanliness. When you have a pet Yorkshire Terrier that is known for its silky and flowing coats, it is important that you brush it well and regularly to avoid clogging. Mating will cause your pet’s coat to lose its luster and vitality.
If you have recently acquired a Yorkie and have no experience in dog grooming, follow this simple guide to properly brush your pet’s coat.
Use conditioner first
Before working with the dog’s hair, make sure it is not dry. Brushing a dry coat can be painful, especially if your pet has a skin condition. Use a good quality dog coat to condition and moisturize your pet’s coat. This will help prevent shedding or tearing the hair while brushing and also helps strengthen the coat. If your dog’s skin is sensitive, you can combine 1 part dog conditioner with 5 parts water in a spritzer bottle to create a more sensitive formula. If your pet’s coat is naturally oily, skip this first step because using a conditioner will only weigh down the skin.
Brush gently in sections
To ensure that the fur in all parts of the body is covered, brush the coat in sections. It is better to use a pin brush with a metal tip. Pin brushes that have a rubber or plastic back can tear and damage the coat. Brush gently for sections from the root to the tip with the lie of the hair, as brushing against can cause tangles. Working this way will also help distribute the natural oils throughout your pet’s skin.
Remove all nodes
When working with your Yorkie’s hair, you are sure to encounter knots. It is important to work these knots with your hands and not with a brush, as the latter can damage the hair. Look for knots in areas where the fur sheds the most such as the armpits, behind the ears, under the tail and even in the groin. If you find a large stubborn knot, carefully cut it with a pair of scissors. Have someone hold your fur baby while you do this to prevent accidents.
Follow these steps and comb your Yorkie’s coat regularly and it will definitely stay healthy and shiny! Adding bows and ribbons also adds to the charm!
