Too Old To Learn Scuba Diving?

We are always told that we should learn sports when we are young, when our bodies are more resistant to the bruises and bumps that can afflict us when we learn a new sport. This is true to some extent.

Take for example, my experience learning to wind surf. I learned the sport when I was 26. If I had to learn this sport now at the age of 42, chances are I wouldn’t go far and would probably give up after 1 or 2 tries. Learning to windsurf was like fighting with all the forces at the same time! We’re talking about trying to balance on a broken wave on a slippery wet board, while at the same time maneuvering a sail that weighs more than you in the correct direction you want to go. In the process, I contributed blood and flesh from the cuts. on barnacles and bruises from hitting the surfboard more than once before falling into the water.

But there is a big difference with scuba diving. YOU ARE NEVER TOO OLD TO LEARN SCUBA DIVING. I can never say this enough. I learned scuba diving when I was 38. Now I don’t say that 38 is a ripe old age, but still, the body feels a little less strong and less resistant. In addition, as we get older, we seem to have more fears. Maybe we feel like we have more to lose if something happens to us.

I say middle age and beyond should never be a factor in learning scuba diving BUT you need to have these:

1) an intense love for the sea

2) the willingness to learn from someone younger than you

3) relatively good health and finally, but very important

4) time and money

Now I assume that you are thinking about learning scuba diving because you want to make this a sport that you can enjoy every other weekend if time and money allow and not just learn for education.

An intense love for the sea

To enjoy a scuba diving trip, you must love the sea and I mean really love it with all its wonderful creatures big and small. You’ll know what I mean on your first scuba diving trip after clearing your Open Water tests.

It is unlikely that your scuba diving partners on your first diving trip will be the same classmates on your scuba diving course. Due to time and money constraints, you will find that you may be the only one desperate enough to join a scuba diving trip shortly after your certification.

Most often, your diving partners will be a diving team that will do at least 4 dives a day plus another one at night. This means that on a scuba diving trip, most of the time you don’t do anything but dive, talk about the sea creatures and encounters of each dive, before adapting for the next dive. For someone who just wants to do a dive a day and then go shopping, he/she may be disappointed since many great scuba diving locations have few of these shopping and entertainment facilities.

In case you’re already stressed just thinking about it, don’t be. Every scuba diving beginner goes through this. Just have a freshman attitude, be humble and you’ll find that seasoned divers are more than willing to share tips and can even help you prepare before a dive.

Willingness to learn from someone younger than you

Your scuba diving instructor is probably someone much younger than you. Some diving instructors have an attitude and are arrogant, so you may have to live with it for at least 3 weekends before becoming certified – 1st weekend for classroom and theory, 2nd weekend for pool sessions and a 3rd weekend for the tests open water Put your ego aside and just deal with it, it will be worth it in the end.

That being said, that’s not to say there aren’t good, friendly scuba diving instructors around. I was fortunate to receive diving instruction from PC, a very kind and patient man, without whom my learning experience in diving would not have been so smooth and enjoyable.

Health Relatively Good

It is not necessary to be in peak fitness before you can take up scuba diving. However, you would need some strength to be able to walk with full scuba diving equipment strapped on you. Once you enter the water with all your gear, you are almost weightless. But it is the few steps you have to take to enter the boat or to cross the beach in the water that can be a challenge for a person who is not used to carrying heavy loads on them.

That being said, some scuba diving resorts have fantastic dive staff who can help overcome this by bringing the tanks and gear to the boat for you to fit into the boat. And of course if you are on a live-a-board (live, eat, dive, sleep, on board a boat throughout the diving trip), then this may not be relevant.

Time and money

This is probably the 2 most decisive factors of whether someone continues to enjoy scuba diving after passing the Open Water tests. Certification through a scuba diving course is very fast, only 3 weekends. And not too expensive, probably around $300 to $400, including a dive trip out of the country for the open water tests. But if you do not go near a scuba diving area, it is more likely that you will have to travel a distance or even out of the country to do a good dive.

Now just think about how much each trip will cost you and multiply it by how many times you would like to go scuba diving in a year. When you do the sums, it can be amazing. So cut the number of dives you want to do in a year, and then calculate and cut some more.

In our scuba diving class, my husband and I were the only ones who continued diving after the class was over. Even then, we didn’t manage to do the number of dives we would have really loved to do in a year. That’s how we finally end up doing an average of 1 dive a year. This more or less ensures that we will always be diving as “scuba diving newbies” (hence the name of the blog). A scuba diver becomes “rusty” when the interval between each dive trip is too long. Ideally, we should dive at least once every quarter.

I haven’t even gone into calculating the other “investments” to customize your gear like your own BC (buoyancy control), your own octopus (breathing apparatus) and your wet suit.

Having said all this, I still believe that you are never too old to learn and enjoy scuba diving. Even with our limited dives since we were certified and diving as scuba diving beginners, we enjoyed all of our dive trips. Find the right people to dive with, find a great dive site that suits your preferences (be it macro, to check out small sea creatures, or see bigger fish) and nearby thermal facilities to soothe your body aches after a diving – it’s a wonderful combination. which will almost always ensure a great scuba diving experience!

A scuba diving beginner can always enjoy a happy dive!
