Late Winter, Early Spring Spinnerbait Tip – Slow Rolling For Big Bass

With “Old Man Winter” unleashing his icy grip, it’s time to throw out the bass fishing gear and hit your favorite bass spots!

How can you catch some of the biggest bass of the year?

A great technique to help catch more of the hawgs migrating from their deep water winter havens, is to slow a spinnerbait right through their nose…

Once the late winter/early spring sun does its magic and sends the water temperature into the mid-forties, the slow bass begin their ascent in the points and descend for set the stage for spring mating rituals.

A skilled bass angler, equipped with the right gear and knowledge can take advantage of this pattern by presenting a slow, thrashing lure through the cover and right into the strike zone of these very hungry finny creatures.

The Right Stuff – Nitty-Gritty Details of Slow Rolling for Bass

  • Rod, reel and line combo – The most common rod and reel combo set-up for slow spinning spinnerbaits includes a 6.5 to 7 foot medium heavy action, a trigger rod (casting rod) with a quality baitcasting reel spooled with 12 to 20 lb fluorocarbon line. The fluorocarbon line combines minimal stretch with great sensitivity and ultra-low visibility that can be important in the clearer waters of early spring.
  • The bait – Any spinnerbait is good as long as it is a single spinnerbait attached to a light wire arm with a quality ball bearing spinner. Bait weight and paddle size vary with the depth of water being fished (3/4 oz. lures with larger paddles for water deeper than 15 feet; 1/2 in 3/ 8 oz. with medium blades for 5 to 15 feet deep; and 1. /4 oz with a smaller blade (Vibra-Bug) for water < 5 feet deep). Typically, nickel/white blades are used for clear water, gold for dyes and fluorescent paints or copper blades for dirty water. The colors of the spinnerbait head and skirt vary depending on the water clarity and the type of forage present.
  • The Find – Run long casts through the structure being fished letting the bait float to the bottom. Once bottom contact is made, begin a slow and steady retrieve so that the bait remains in contact with the cover. Sometimes it pays to experiment with the retrieve so try either a yo-yo or a stop and go variation depending on the mood of the bass.
  • Structure and Cover – Obviously it varies with the body of water, but look for deep water wintering areas at the base of moderately sloping banks or points connected to shallow spawning areas. Start working the deeper sections of the structure before working towards the bottom until contact with the bottom is made.

Taking the time to learn how to slow the spinnerbaits roll through cover will allow you to literally drop your offer on the nose of some really huge and very hungry bass that are looking to “power-up” before the spawning begins…
