Juan Diaz – "The Baby Bull"
Diaz, who recently turned 24, lost his WBA, WBO and IBF title belts to Nate Campbell on March 8, 2008. The defeat was his first in his career in the fight Diaz suffered a severe cut over his left eye that was caused by a headbutt, the cut affected Diaz’s vision throughout the fight. Diaz reports that now his left eye is completely healed after a minor procedure was performed to remove an infection as Diaz describes the cut and his “stubbornness” for not listing to his angle caused him to lose the struggle Diaz says he strayed from his usual fight plan which includes jabbing and a flurry of combinations instead Diaz stayed inside and Campbell was able to land some solid shots. Two of the three judges scored the bout for Campbell giving him the split decision victory.
Diaz informs us that his next fight is scheduled for September 6, 2008 against Michael Katsidis. The fight will take place in the Toyota Center in Houston, Texas, which is the hometown of Diaz, the only detail that remains is for the two fighters to officially sign the contract. This will be Diaz’s return to Houston after not fighting there for 3 years and he sees this as a big home field advantage. Diaz is very proud to be a champion, he understands the dedication required to regain his belt. Diaz is not only committed to regaining championships, he is also a full-time student who next year will graduate from the University of Houston where he is a pre-law major. According to Diaz, his daily routine includes an early rise and direct to the 24/7 Wellness Center where he starts his day with weight training followed by Swimming and after the University, Diaz is so committed to graduate that he also enrolled in Summer Classes. At night, Diaz will hit the gym again to finish his workout for the day on the stair master. This daily workout routine that differs from the normal boxer’s workout plan was devised by his strength and conditioning coach Brian Caldwell. With all that is going on, Diaz finds time to study to maintain good grades, after graduating Diaz who is Mexican, the American plans to go to the Faculty of Law. Finally, I wanted to be involved in both Immigration Law and Sports Contracts. Diaz, like former Mexican boxing champion and Hall of fame inductee Carlos Palomino, will be one of the few champion boxers with a college degree. Indeed, Palomino on January 21, 1977 fought against Armando Muniz, it was the first time that two boxers with university degrees fought for a world title.
Diaz who started learning to box at the age of 8 had a significant amateur career compiling a record of 105-5, but was banned from competing for the Mexican Olympic team in 2000 as he was underage. Not wanting to wait another four years, Diaz turned pro and won his first professional fight on June 23, 2000 at the age of 16, defeating Rafael Ortiz with a first-round knockout. Since their first fight Diaz has won 32 fights and has a record of 33-1. Now Diaz is looking to resume his winning ways against the tough Michael Katsidis who hails from Toowoomba, Australia. Katsidis (23 -1) (20KO’s) is also coming off his first loss in which he was defeated by Joel Casamayor in the 10th round. Diaz says he’s started studying film of Katsidis and along with his longtime coaching staff or Ronnie Fields and Derwin Richards will develop a top game plan. Diaz who was devastated by the loss of his title belts realizes that he has to look forward and continue with his career. A win over Katsidis would put him back in the lightweight title hunt which, in addition to Campbell and Casamayor, includes rising talent Anthony Peterson and Amir Khan.
After Nate Campbell, Diaz changed promoters from Don King to Oscar De La Hoya’s Golden Boy. Juan says the change was for the better now it’s with the promoters who care about their fighters and guide them to the correct matches. Golden Boy introduced Diaz to the April 19 Joe Calzaghe – Bernard Hopkins fight in Las Vegas. Diaz was part of the weigh-in event and shared the stage with many great fighters and celebrities. As legendary announcer Michael Buffer announced each celebrity on stage, Diaz was sure to remind Buffer to announce as Juan Diaz “The Baby Bull”. Diaz is truly “The Baby Bull” with an unquestionable work ethic and a never-give-up attitude “The Baby Bull” is on the right track in life.
