Street Fighting Moves – How Traditional Martial Arts Discriminate Against Middle Aged Men & Women

Walk into any traditional martial arts dojo, and just observe. Notice how many middle-aged men and women you see here over the age of 50. I would say very few. Have you ever wondered why? If you say that martial arts are only for the very young, then how do you account for the fact that most teachers who consider themselves masters are in their 50s and 60s? (By the way, to reach your 50s and 60s in the mastery of a martial art usually means that you started perhaps as a teenager and because you are a master, you can continue to practice and maintain your skill level by practicing hours every day. . The average everyday person has a life and families and cannot devote every waking hour to perfecting the art of combat.)

I’m well into middle age, but I have the body, strength, and stamina of a 30-year-old—not by accident, but because I take great care of myself with progressive weight lifting, regular jogging, and l healthy food. However, even for a “young” man in my condition, the typical martial arts program is not set up to cater to me and my age range.

I will reveal to you now how and why the traditional martial arts program unintentionally and perhaps unintentionally, but definitely, discriminates against the middle-aged man or woman. (For abbreviated purposes, TMA will stand for Traditional Martial Arts.)

TMA (Karate, Kung Fu, Taekwondo, etc.) Emphasize and Glorify “High Kicks” – Because of most of the engagement and fiction of what is portrayed in the movies, high kicks are emphasized and taught. The interesting thing is that, for the protection of the author in real life, trying to kick high is risky, stupid, imprudent and impractical. Trying to hit someone in the face makes about as much sense as trying to hit someone in the foot. High kicks require extreme hamstring and hip flexibility which begins to decline rapidly after age 40.

TMA teaching systems that require 10, 15 and 20 years per teacher – Man! Who has so much time to allow himself to learn and master to fight? Of course, not the 50 and above.

So what is the solution for the middle-aged man or woman who wants to learn self-defense?

My advice is very direct and succinct. Forget about all the Traditional Martial Arts programs, and enroll in a Reality Based Self Protection program that does not emphasize high kicks and extreme flexibility of the leg and muscles, and instead of taking years to master can be taught and learned in a matter of a weekend.
